Cloyster's backstory begins with its origin as Shellder, a small, bivalve Pokémon that lives in the sea. When a Shellder is exposed to a Water Stone, it evolves into Cloyster, gaining a much harder shell and enhanced defensive capabilities. Shellder and Cloyster are relatives of Gastrodon, sharing a similar habitat and biological characteristics. Cloyster's evolution into its current form is marked by its ability to survive in harsh marine environments, using its tough shell for protection and hunting.

In the Pokémon world, Cloyster plays a significant role as both a defender and an attacker. It is rarely found in the wild, primarily residing on the sea floor among rocks and coral. Cloyster uses its shell as a weapon, launching its spikes at opponents in rapid succession. This Pokémon's signature move in Generation I was Clamp, which reflects its ability to grasp and control its enemies with its powerful shell. Cloyster's unique abilities make it a valuable asset in battles, where it can withstand and retaliate against formidable opponents.

Cloyster is characterized by its jagged, blue-violet outer shell and its black, pearl-like face. It has two white eyes and a mouth, giving it a distinctive appearance. The shell is adorned with multiple conical horns and a prominent spike above its head. Cloyster's defensive shell not only protects it from physical attacks but also makes it impervious to extreme conditions, including bomb blasts and missile strikes. Its method of locomotion involves siphon-jet propulsion, where it swallows seawater and ejects it to move swiftly through the water. Cloyster's ability to close its shell tightly allows it to survive and thrive in various environments, making it a resilient and versatile Pokémon.
