Backstory

Snorlax's origins trace back to its pre-evolution form, Munchlax, which becomes Snorlax when it reaches a high level of friendship with its Trainer. Snorlax was designed by Ken Sugimori and was inspired by Game Freak planner Kōji Nishino, who was known for his large appetite. Snorlax's behavior and appearance are also reminiscent of hibernating bears and food comas, aligning with its characteristic voracious eating followed by long periods of sleep.

Role in the Pokémon World

In the Pokémon games, Snorlax is often found sleeping in inconvenient locations, blocking paths and requiring a Poké Flute to awaken. This feature appears in Generations I and II, their remakes, and Pokémon X and Y. Beyond the games, Snorlax has appeared in various Pokémon media, including the animated series and trading card game. Its role often emphasizes its enormous size and lethargic nature, but also its surprising strength and utility in battles.

Characteristics and Abilities

Snorlax is a large, bipedal Pokémon with a dark blue-green body and a cream-colored face, belly, and feet. Its body is primarily composed of its belly, making it the heaviest Normal-type Pokémon. Snorlax requires around 900 lbs. (400 kg) of food daily and can consume almost anything, including moldy food and toxins, without adverse effects. Despite its seemingly lazy demeanor, Snorlax can unleash tremendous power when necessary. In its Gigantamax form, Snorlax's belly becomes a small ecosystem, featuring patches of grass, bushes, and a large tree. Gigantamax Snorlax is capable of using the G-Max Move G-Max Replenish, showcasing its formidable battle capabilities.
