Squirtle's backstory is rooted in the rich lore of the Pokémon universe. As a young Pokémon, Squirtle is often found near bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, and rivers, making it relatively scarce in the wild. Its evolution begins at level 16, when it transforms into Wartortle, and it further evolves into Blastoise at level 36. Squirtle's evolutionary line is iconic, symbolizing the growth and development trainers experience alongside their Pokémon partners.
In the Pokémon world, Squirtle plays a significant role as one of the three initial choices for trainers in the Kanto region. Its selection as a starter Pokémon allows trainers to develop a strong bond with it from the beginning of their journey. In various Pokémon games and media, Squirtle is depicted as a reliable and courageous companion, often participating in battles and helping trainers achieve their goals. Additionally, Squirtle has made appearances in the Pokémon animated series, movies, and spin-off games, further solidifying its place in the franchise.
Squirtle's characteristics and abilities highlight its adaptability and strength. It is a small, light-blue turtle-like creature with a tough shell that provides protection and aids in high-speed swimming. Squirtle can withdraw into its shell to defend itself or to sleep, using its grooved, rounded shape to reduce water resistance. It is capable of spraying water from its mouth with great accuracy, a skill useful in both combat and playful scenarios. In Generation II, Squirtle and its evolved forms were notable for being the only Pokémon able to naturally learn the move Skull Bash. Squirtle's design, inspired by baby turtles and terrapins, incorporates elements from Japanese mythology, making it a culturally rich and enduring character in the Pokémon series.
