Abra's backstory in the Pokémon lore is intertwined with its mystical and psychic abilities. This constant need to teleport and its reliance on psychic powers necessitate that Abra sleep for 18 hours a day to maintain its abilities. The deeper its sleep, the farther it can teleport, enabling it to find food or escape threats efficiently.

In the Pokémon world, Abra plays a unique role due to its extraordinary teleportation ability. It is frequently found in urban areas but is rarely seen for long, as it teleports to a new location approximately once every hour. This elusive nature makes it a challenging Pokémon to catch in games such as Pokémon Red and Blue, where it will often flee from battles by using Teleport. Abra is characterized by its primarily yellow body with distinct black segmentations visible at its joints. Its face is kite-shaped with a small, pale yellow snout, and it has two short, pointed ears. Abra's wide eyes are usually closed, indicative of its constant state of rest. Its limbs have three digits each, with toes being longer than fingers. Additionally, Abra's thick, long tail has a brown band near the tip. Its abilities include not only teleportation but also various extrasensory powers that allow it to perform tasks even while asleep.
