Rowlet

Rowlet (Japanese: モクロー Mokuroh) is a dual-type Grass/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It is one of the three first partner Pokémon available in the Alola region, alongside Litten and Popplio, in the games Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. Rowlet also serves as one of the starter Pokémon in the Hisui region in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Rowlet was officially revealed to the public on May 10, 2016, making it the second Generation VII Pokémon to be unveiled.

Rowlet’s backstory is tied closely to its evolution line. It evolves into Dartrix starting at level 17 and further evolves into Decidueye at level 34. In the Hisui region, Rowlet also evolves into Dartrix at level 17 but then into Hisuian Decidueye at level 36. The Hisuian forms differ in secondary typing, with Hisuian Decidueye being Grass/Fighting instead of Grass/Ghost like the Alolan Decidueye. This unique evolution path and variation in typing are a significant aspect of Rowlet’s identity in the Pokémon world.

In the Pokémon universe, Rowlet plays a vital role as a starter Pokémon in the Alola and Hisui regions. Trainers choose Rowlet at the beginning of their journey, helping them navigate and battle through various challenges. Rowlet’s unique typing and abilities make it a strategic choice for players, offering versatility in battles. Its presence in Pokémon Legends: Arceus also ties it to the historical lore of the Hisui region, expanding its significance within the game's narrative and providing players with a connection to the region’s past.

Rowlet is characterized by its small, owl-like appearance, with a round body and short legs. Its plumage is primarily beige, with a white facial disc and underside. The facial disc resembles overlapping circles, and Rowlet's large black eyes and stubby beak contribute to its distinctive look. Notably, Rowlet has two leaves sprouting from its chest, resembling a bowtie, and additional leaves forming its tail and lining the undersides of its wings. As a nocturnal Pokémon, Rowlet stores energy during the day through photosynthesis. It is known for its silent gliding, excellent night vision, and the ability to rotate its head almost 180 degrees. In battle, Rowlet uses its sharp feather blades to launch attacks from the air. The Pokémon also prefers tight, dark spaces and often nests in its Trainer's bag or jacket. Rowlet and its evolved forms are the only Pokémon known to have the Ability Long Reach.
