Paras (Pokémon)

Paras (Japanese: パラス Paras) is a dual-type Bug/Grass Pokémon introduced in Generation I of the Pokémon series. It evolves into Parasect starting at level 24. Known for the distinctive mushrooms growing on its back, Paras is recognized for its unique biological and evolutionary traits.

Paras is depicted as an orange, insectoid Pokémon resembling the nymph stage of a cicada. Its ovoid body is segmented and equipped with three pairs of legs, the foremost of which are larger with sharp claws. Notable features include five specks on its forehead and a pair of circular eyes with large pseudopupils. The mushrooms on Paras's back, known as tochukaso, are a significant part of its biology, as they are parasitic and influence the Pokémon's behavior and actions.

In the Pokémon world, Paras is often found in damp environments such as caves and forests. Its habitat is essential for the growth of the tochukaso mushrooms, which thrive in moisture-rich areas. In regions like Alola, where the climate is less conducive to their growth, these mushrooms do not flourish as well. Paras’s role extends beyond its ecological niche, as the tochukaso mushrooms have medicinal properties and are sought after for their potential to extend life.

Paras is characterized by its dual Bug/Grass typing, which gives it specific strengths and weaknesses in battles. It is particularly known for its move Spore, which induces sleep in opponents and was its signature move before Generation III. The parasitic mushrooms on its back control many of its actions, compelling Paras to drain nutrients from tree roots. Additionally, Paras has the ability Effect Spore, which can cause status conditions in opponents upon contact. Its evolutionary transition to Parasect at level 24 enhances its abilities and further integrates the parasitic relationship with the tochukaso mushrooms.
