Slaking's backstory is deeply intertwined with its evolution. It begins its life as Slakoth, a creature renowned for its extreme laziness and minimal movement. Upon reaching level 18, Slakoth evolves into Vigoroth, which is characterized by its hyperactive and restless nature. Finally, at level 36, Vigoroth evolves into Slaking, returning to a state of lethargy but with increased size and strength. This evolutionary journey represents a cycle of energy levels, from lethargy to hyperactivity and back to lethargy.

In the Pokémon world, Slaking is often found in tropical forests where it spends most of its time lounging and sleeping. Despite its lazy demeanor, it is known to possess enormous strength, capable of releasing built-up energy in powerful bursts. Slaking is often feared by trainers and Pokémon alike for its potential to exert great force. Its presence in the wild is typically marked by the consumption of grass and fallen fruit, and it only moves when necessary to find more food. Slaking’s signature move in Generation III, Slack Off, reflects its lazy nature by allowing it to restore its health.

Slaking is a large, bulky, ape-like Pokémon with a mix of brown and lighter fur, a large pink snout, and thick, jutting brows. Its characteristic white collar of fur extends over its head, ending in a small tuft. Slaking has large, five-fingered hands and two-toed feet, contributing to its imposing appearance. Notably, Slaking is the only Pokémon, along with its pre-evolution Slakoth, that can have the Ability Truant, which causes it to only move every other turn in battle. Despite this hindrance, Slaking boasts the highest base stat total of any non-Mythical, Legendary, or Mega Evolution Pokémon, making it a formidable opponent when it does take action.
