Gloom

Gloom (Japanese: クサイハナ Kusaihana) is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation I of the Pokémon series. It is known for its distinctive, malodorous flower and its evolutionary versatility. Gloom evolves from Oddish starting at level 21 and can further evolve into either Vileplume when exposed to a Leaf Stone or Bellossom when exposed to a Sun Stone.

Gloom's backstory ties deeply with its evolutionary line. Originally, it starts as an Oddish, a small, root-like Pokémon that thrives in grassy plains. At level 21, Oddish undergoes a transformation into Gloom, a stage where it begins to exhibit its unique floral characteristics and its notorious foul smell. This evolutionary step marks a significant change in the Pokémon's abilities and appearance, setting the stage for its potential final evolution into either Vileplume, a more potent Grass/Poison type, or Bellossom, a purely Grass type that sheds its Poison nature.

Within the Pokémon world, Gloom plays a multifaceted role. It is often found in grassy areas and plains, where it can utilize its Grass and Poison-type moves effectively in battles. Its signature move in Generation I, Petal Dance, showcases its combat prowess. Additionally, Gloom's unique ability to emit a strong odor serves both as a means of defense and as an attraction mechanism for prey. This odor, while foul to most humans, contains properties that make it a valuable ingredient in some perfume productions, adding an intriguing layer to its role in both natural and human contexts.

Gloom is characterized by its blue, bipedal form, resembling a Rafflesia plant with rudimentary hands and feet. The flower on its head has spherical petals surrounded by four reddish-brown leaves, with the petals displaying white spots that differ based on the Pokémon's gender. Gloom's eyes are typically closed, and it has thin purple lips. The Pokémon secretes a sticky nectar that appears as drool and can be used as a potent fertilizer. The flower on its head exudes a foul odor strong enough to cause fainting in humans within a mile's radius, though this scent can be appealing to certain prey and even a small number of humans. Gloom's abilities include producing this odor, which intensifies when it feels threatened, and utilizing its Grass and Poison-type moves to defend itself and its territory.
