Hypno has a unique backstory that highlights its mystical and sometimes eerie nature. It is a bipedal Pokémon with yellow skin, triangular ears, and sleepy-looking eyes. Hypno is never seen without its pendulum, a tool it uses to hypnotize its prey. According to various Pokédex entries, Hypno can put people to sleep by swinging its pendulum and is known to consume their dreams. This ability has led to legends of Hypno abducting children, although such incidents are rare, especially in the Alola region where it primarily preys on Komala.
In the Pokémon world, Hypno serves multiple roles. It is often found in remote areas, away from human settlements, preferring less-traveled roads. Despite its somewhat sinister reputation, Hypno has also been depicted as a helpful creature in certain contexts. For instance, some Hypno assist doctors in hospitals to help patients who have trouble sleeping. In the Trainers' School in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Hypno is even shown to create illusions, demonstrating its versatile psychic abilities.
Hypno is characterized by its hypnotic abilities and distinct physical features. It stands on two legs, has five fingers on each hand, and three toes on each foot, with pink pads on the undersides. The white ruff around its neck is longer on females. Hypno's pendulum, resembling a flat, silver ring, is essential for its hypnotic powers. This Pokémon's behavior and appearance are influenced by various mythological and folkloric entities, including the Japanese baku, a dream-eating spirit, and elements of European supernatural creatures like goblins and fairies.
