Marill’s backstory involves its initial misidentification as "Pikablu" by fans due to its slight resemblance to Pikachu. This name stuck for a while, especially during the pre-release period of Pokémon Gold and Silver. In early designs, Marill was depicted with a pink body instead of its iconic blue color. These aspects of Marill's history reflect the intrigue and curiosity surrounding its debut.

In the Pokémon world, Marill is often found near water bodies, where it thrives. Its role in the ecosystem includes feeding on aquatic plants and fishing for food, using its buoyant, oil-filled tail as a tool for stability and flotation. Marill’s ability to swim against strong currents without being hindered by water resistance, thanks to its water-repellent fur, exemplifies its adaptability and survival skills in aquatic environments.

Marill possesses a number of distinctive characteristics and abilities. It is a small, bipedal Pokémon with a spherical body and a white belly. Its ears are round with red insides and are highly sensitive to sound. Marill’s tail is flexible and ends in a blue, bubble-like ball filled with oil that aids in buoyancy. This tail can glow during attacks and serves various functional purposes, such as anchoring Marill when fishing. Marill's fur dries quickly after swimming, preventing it from getting cold. Additionally, Marill can have the Huge Power Ability, enhancing its physical strength significantly, making it a versatile and dynamic member of any Pokémon team.
