Kecleon

Kecleon (Japanese: カクレオン Kakureon) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III of the Pokémon series. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon. Along with Wailmer and Azurill, Kecleon was one of the first Generation III Pokémon revealed, making its debut on March 7, 2001. Known for its ability to change colors, Kecleon is a unique Pokémon that stands out due to its camouflage capabilities.

Kecleon's backstory is rooted in its distinctive biology and abilities. As a bipedal, reptilian Pokémon, Kecleon is usually green with yellow frills on either side of its head, connected to its yellow lips and rings around its eyes. It has a red zigzag stripe around its midsection, which it cannot change color. This Pokémon is found in tropical and temperate forests, where it uses its color-changing ability to blend into its surroundings, aiding in hunting and evading predators. The color change is also linked to its mood and health, darkening when it is healthier.

In the Pokémon world, Kecleon plays various roles, particularly noted for its appearances in games and the anime. It was the first Pokémon in the anime to demonstrate an Ability. In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, Kecleon is notoriously difficult to recruit, requiring specific conditions to be met. It also features in Pokémon GO, where it made a delayed debut on January 7, 2023, as the last Generation III Pokémon to appear in the game. This adaptability and the challenges associated with its capture highlight Kecleon's elusive nature in the Pokémon universe.

Kecleon's characteristics and abilities are central to its identity. The primary ability, Color Change, allows it to change its body color to match its environment, except for its red stripe. This ability makes it an expert at camouflage, allowing it to become nearly invisible. Additionally, Kecleon can use its long pink tongue to ensnare prey. Variants of Kecleon with different colorations have appeared in various media, including purplish, blue, red, and brown versions. However, these variations' origins, whether due to environmental factors or genetic differences, remain unclear. Kecleon’s unique ability to change colors and its role in the ecosystem underscore its adaptability and enigmatic presence in the Pokémon world.
