Ampharos
Ampharos (Japanese: デンリュウ Denryu) is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II of the Pokémon series. It evolves from Flaaffy starting at level 30 and is the final evolutionary form of Mareep. Ampharos can Mega Evolve into Mega Ampharos, which gains the additional Dragon typing, using the Ampharosite. Ampharos was first revealed in the May 1997 issue of CoroCoro magazine.

Ampharos's backstory is rooted in its evolutionary line, which begins with Mareep, a sheep-like Pokémon that evolves into Flaaffy and finally into Ampharos. Each stage of its evolution involves shedding its wool, culminating in Ampharos, which is nearly devoid of wool except for a tuft at the end of its tail and its Mega Evolution form. Historically, Ampharos has been known for the light it emits from the red orb on its tail, which has been used as a beacon by people for communication and navigation, particularly across the ocean. This unique trait highlights Ampharos's role in human and Pokémon communities as a source of light and guidance.
In the Pokémon world, Ampharos is often found in grasslands and farms, where it lives alongside its pre-evolved forms, Mareep and Flaaffy. Its bright tail light has practical applications, such as serving as a lighthouse or signaling device, making it an important Pokémon for people living in remote areas. In battle, Ampharos is valued for its powerful Electric-type moves and, when it Mega Evolves, its additional Dragon-type capabilities. The Mega Evolution not only changes its appearance but also enhances its combat abilities, allowing it to unleash even more potent electrical attacks.
Ampharos is characterized by its yellow, bipedal ovine form with a distinctive red orb on its forehead and tail. Its body is predominantly smooth, with black stripes on its ears and neck, and stubby arms resembling flippers. When it Mega Evolves, Ampharos's appearance changes significantly; it regrows white wool on its head and tail, and its body becomes more dragon-like, reflecting its newly acquired Dragon type. Its red orbs emit a powerful light when it stores electrical energy. Ampharos's name is derived from "amp," a measure of electrical current, and "pharos," the Greek word for lighthouse, emphasizing its role as a light-bringer in both its physical characteristics and its utility in the Pokémon world.
