Ekans' backstory reveals that it inhabits grassy savannas, plains, forests, and desolate wastelands. This Pokémon is often found moving stealthily through the grass, preying on Eggs from Pidgey and Spearow nests but is also known to strike other prey from behind. Ekans can detect danger and the scent of prey by flicking its tongue out. It has the ability to detach its jaw to swallow large prey, although this can sometimes result in immobility or fainting. At night, Ekans usually wraps itself around tree branches or coils up on the ground to rest, making it capable of defending itself from all directions. It is also revealed in the second Pokémon movie that Ekans possesses some swimming abilities.

In the Pokémon world, Ekans primarily serves roles that underscore its predatory and stealthy nature. It has been featured in various Pokémon games where it can be found in the wild and trained by players. In the animated series, it is often portrayed under the ownership of antagonistic characters such as Jessie from Team Rocket, adding to its image as a cunning and sly Pokémon. Despite debuting early in the series, Ekans has never been scanned with a Pokédex in the animated series, making it unique among Pokémon for this trivia.

It has a round, pink tongue and three pairs of black lines encircling its body. While a newborn Ekans' bite is not venomous, it grows more potent with age. Ekans can detect danger with its tongue and has a jaw that can detach to swallow large prey. It has a signature move, Glare, which it and its evolution Arbok were initially the only Pokémon capable of learning. Ekans' ability to coil up and its natural camouflage make it a formidable Pokémon in both offensive and defensive situations.
