Muk's backstory begins with its origin in heavily polluted areas, such as industrial zones and contaminated bodies of water. Its creation is attributed to the accumulation of toxic sludge, giving life to this amorphous, sentient being. As environmental conditions improved over time, Muk's population saw a decline due to cleaner ecosystems and targeted extermination efforts. This decline has led to conservation measures, such as the creation of sludge ponds, to prevent Muk's potential extinction.

In the Pokémon world, Muk plays a crucial role as a living biohazard, consuming and breaking down waste materials. It can be found in polluted environments where it feeds on garbage and toxic refuse, mitigating pollution levels. Despite its hazardous nature, Muk's presence is vital for managing waste in densely populated urban areas and industrial sites, contributing to the ecosystem's balance.

Muk is characterized by its large, sticky, amorphous body composed of living sludge. It has small eyes with black pupils, an enormous mouth, and a gray tongue, with strands of ooze connecting its jaws. Muk's touch is lethal to plant life, causing severe sickness in humans and Pokémon. Alolan Muk, with its vibrant coloration and crystallized poison shards, differs in that it does not emit a foul stench. Both forms possess unique abilities; standard Muk can have the Stench ability, while Alolan Muk can have the Power of Alchemy ability. These abilities, combined with their toxic nature, make Muk a formidable and essential creature within the Pokémon world.
