Caterpie (Japanese: キャタピー Caterpie) is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I of the Pokémon series. It evolves into Metapod starting at level 7, which then evolves into Butterfree starting at level 10. Caterpie is known for its rapid growth and simple evolutionary path, making it an ideal Pokémon for new trainers.

Caterpie's backstory is rooted in its life as a caterpillar Pokémon inhabiting temperate forests and jungles. It has a voracious appetite, consuming large quantities of leaves daily, which fuels its rapid growth. This constant eating leads Caterpie to shed its skin multiple times before it finally encases itself in a cocoon to evolve into Metapod. Despite its effective camouflage in green foliage, Caterpie is often preyed upon by Flying-type Pokémon.

Caterpie's small feet are equipped with suction cups, allowing it to climb various surfaces effortlessly. Additionally, it can produce silk from its mouth to entangle foes, a technique it often uses for defense.
