Cubone (Japanese: カラカラ Karakara) is a Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. Known as the Lonely Pokémon, Cubone evolves into Marowak starting at level 28, and in the Alola region, it evolves into Alolan Marowak at night beginning at the same level. Cubone's distinct appearance and emotional backstory make it a memorable character in the Pokémon series.

Cubone's backstory is one of the most poignant among Pokémon. It wears the skull of its deceased mother as a helmet, mourning her loss continuously. This tragedy leads to its nickname, the Lonely Pokémon. Cubone's cries can be heard at night, especially under a full moon, where it often mistakes the moon for its mother's spirit, adding to the Pokémon's melancholic lore. These cries are said to attract predators like Mandibuzz, which adds to the danger Cubone faces in its natural habitat.

In the Pokémon world, Cubone is commonly found in rocky areas, including mountains and caves. It was once known to inhabit the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, a place where deceased Pokémon were laid to rest. Cubone is not only significant due to its poignant story but also for its evolutionary path. When Cubone comes to terms with its mother's death, it evolves into Marowak, signifying its emotional growth and strength. In Alola, this evolution takes a unique turn, transforming Cubone into an Alolan Marowak with a different type combination and abilities.

Cubone's characteristics and abilities reflect its tough, resilient nature. It is a small, bipedal, dinosaur-like reptilian Pokémon with light brown skin and a cream-colored belly. Cubone wields a bone as a weapon, demonstrating remarkable skill in using it for both attack and defense. It is one of the few Pokémon that can learn moves like Bone Club and Bonemerang, and it can use the Thick Club item to enhance its power further. Despite its small size and tragic past, Cubone's ability to survive and grow stronger through its grief makes it a unique and enduring figure in the Pokémon series.
