Steelix

Steelix (Japanese: ハガネール Haganeil) is a dual-type Steel/Ground Pokémon introduced in Generation II of the Pokémon series. It evolves from Onix when traded while holding a Metal Coat. Steelix can also Mega Evolve into Mega Steelix using the Steelixite. Known for its immense strength and durability, Steelix is a prominent Pokémon both in battles and within the lore of the Pokémon world.

Steelix's backstory is closely tied to its pre-evolution, Onix. According to Pokémon lore, Steelix's evolution occurs when an Onix's composition becomes more diamond-like after living underground for about 100 years, combined with the exposure to high pressures and temperatures. This transformation hardens its body to be tougher than diamonds. The evolution from Onix to Steelix signifies a transition from a rocky serpentine form to a steel-plated, even more formidable creature.

In the Pokémon world, Steelix plays significant roles in various contexts. In the main series games, Steelix is often seen as a powerful ally for trainers specializing in Steel-type Pokémon. Additionally, a special Steelix is revered in the Lental region as one of the seven guardian Illumina Pokémon, symbolizing its cultural and mystical importance. Steelix's formidable defense and ground-burrowing capabilities make it a valuable asset in both battles and explorations within the Pokémon universe.

Steelix is characterized by its long, serpentine body made up of rock-like sections that are silvery-gray in color. Its body is segmented with large rock spikes protruding from several sections, enhancing its intimidating appearance. Steelix's head is predominantly its wide jaw, filled with large square teeth. Notably, Steelix can burrow deep underground, further than its predecessor Onix, and can withstand extreme underground pressures and temperatures. When it Mega Evolves, Steelix's body becomes even more massive and armored, with additional crystalline features and an enhanced defensive capability, making it nearly impervious to damage. This Pokémon’s powerful jaws allow it to chew through boulders effortlessly, and its eyes, capable of seeing in the dark, add to its formidable underground navigation skills.
