Darkrai's backstory is steeped in mystery and intrigue. According to various Pokémon legends and media, Darkrai is known to inhabit dreams, causing those it visits to experience unending nightmares. This behavior is not inherently malevolent but rather a defense mechanism to protect itself. Throughout the Pokémon series, Darkrai has appeared in numerous games and episodes, often depicted as a solitary figure misunderstood by those around it. Its relationship with Cresselia, which embodies pleasant dreams and the ability to dispel nightmares, further highlights its role as a creature of the night.

Within the Pokémon world, Darkrai plays a significant role in both the lore and gameplay. In the anime and games, it is often portrayed as a powerful and elusive Pokémon, sought after for its unique abilities. In "The Rise of Darkrai," it is shown to have considerable strength, though it is not as powerful as the legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia. Darkrai's appearances in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series further elaborate on its complex nature, presenting it sometimes as an antagonist and other times as a misunderstood entity. It also appears in various special events within the main series games, often requiring special conditions or items to encounter.

Darkrai's characteristics and abilities are distinctive and formidable. It is a black, shadow-like Pokémon with a white fog-like ghostly plume on its head, covering one of its blue eyes, and a red spiky growth around its neck. Its form is slender with long, black tatters that resemble a cloak. Darkrai is capable of flight, can become a shadow to escape danger, and has the unique ability to speak some human languages. It is the only Pokémon that can learn the move Dark Void, which puts opponents to sleep, and it possesses the ability Bad Dreams, which causes sleeping opponents to lose health. Darkrai's power is particularly noted on nights of the new moon, enhancing its association with darkness and nightmares.
