In terms of backstory, Skarmory is depicted as a resilient and battle-hardened Pokémon. It inhabits harsh environments where the continual abrasion against thorn bushes toughens its skin and feathers into a metal-like state. Historically, ancient warriors utilized Skarmory's shed feathers, which are as sharp as blades, for making swords. This Pokémon is often found nesting in thorn bushes, and it avoids rain to prevent rusting of its metallic body.

Within the Pokémon world, Skarmory serves various roles. It is a popular choice for heraldic designs due to its majestic and fearsome appearance. In the Galar region, Skarmory is known to engage in territorial clashes with Corviknight, another Steel/Flying type Pokémon. Additionally, at Blueberry Academy, Skarmory is employed for the school's Flying Taxi service, showcasing its strength and reliability in practical applications.

Skarmory's characteristics and abilities highlight its formidable nature. It has a long, metallic blue neck, legs, and tail, with sharp wings that can move independently. These hollow wings enable it to reach speeds up to 185 mph (300 km/h). Skarmory's steel wings become battered through battles but regenerate annually, restoring their sharpness. Its defensive capabilities are notable, with the highest base Defense stat among all Flying-type Pokémon. Skarmory is also capable of learning Steel Wing, a move that was once its signature. Its design is inspired by mythological metallic birds and possibly incorporates elements of paper cranes and swords from Japanese culture.
