Slakoth's backstory is rooted in its unique evolutionary journey. According to Pokémon lore, it spends the majority of its life in a state of near-constant inactivity. This behavior is exemplified by its tendency to sleep for more than twenty hours a day, making it one of the most lethargic Pokémon. Despite its sedentary lifestyle, Slakoth has the ability to travel significant distances by swimming in rivers when necessary. Its evolutionary line is noted for the dramatic shift in energy levels, with Slakoth being extremely lazy, Vigoroth becoming highly energetic, and Slaking reverting to a state of laziness.
In the Pokémon world, Slakoth plays a specific role due to its unique characteristics. It resides in tropical forests and maintains the same nest throughout its life. Its presence can make those around it drowsy, emphasizing its influence on its environment. In the games, Slakoth's signature move in Generation III was Slack Off, which allows it to restore half of its maximum HP. Additionally, Slakoth and its fully evolved form, Slaking, are the only known Pokémon to have the Truant Ability prior to Generation V and in Generation IX.
Slakoth is characterized by its brown, quadrupedal form with coarse, shaggy fur and distinctive dark brown stripes on its back. It has a large snout, pink eyelids, and dark rings around its eyes. Its long arms and shorter legs, each ending in two sharp claws, contribute to its sloth-like appearance. Its underbelly and rear are pink, adding to its unique look. Although it requires minimal food, consuming only three leaves per day, it has a notably slow heart rate, beating just once a minute. Slakoth's evolutionary design and behavior are inspired by real-life sloths and human infants, reflecting its stages of energy and development.
